By Vijay Tailor-Hamblin,
In our most recent eyeYPAG meeting on the 15th of November, we started (as usual) with an icebreaker : What are you most excited for this holiday season? The answers varied from the simple joys of M&S festive gingerbread cookies to reminiscing of happy family memories of sledding and snowball fights! Everyone is very excited for Christmas time TV and the overall joys of being able to spend christmases in London!
Now onto some real work! We started off by reviewing documents sent over from the European network of YPAGs – rare diseases (The Teddy Network) of whom are based in Bari, Italy. The documents were a compilation of explaining young people’s rights within the world of clinical research. We all thoroughly read through the text and each wrote a page of notes about ‘what we liked’ and ‘what we thought could be improved’. A great way to start the session!
Shortly after, our own Annegret and Meghan gave us an update on their COSMYC study – all to do with Myopia (short sightedness)! They shared with us the abstract* they had written which is compiled of 4 sections : Background, Methods, Outcomes and Results
Later on in our meeting, we discussed how green spaces are thought to possibly make you healthier. We suggested ways to include more green spaces in our environment ; increase greenery in schools, add more parks to densely populated city areas, and include more nature excursions in the school curriculum! To conclude, we all definitively agreed that increasing green spaces was a no risk possible solution to aid in healthy lifestyles!
*An abstract is a summary of the project one has been working on – in this case COSMYC!
