By KSS YPAG,

At the YPAG KSS meeting in June held at the Royal Alex Children’s Hospital in Brighton, the group heard from Sharon, a Paediatric Research Nurse from University Hospitals Sussex, whose project is looking at improving care for Children and Young People admitted to hospital with Mental Health Issues.

Increasing numbers of children and young people are being admitted to general children’s wards due to serious mental health problems and general medical staff have limited training in this area and must wait for specialist staff (such as psychiatrists) to assess these patients.

Sharon is planning to approach patients previously admitted to hospital due to their mental health struggles to get feedback on their experience and find out how to improve general ward areas for these patients and identify training needs for staff.

The YPAG group reviewed Sharon’s participant information sheets and gave feedback on how to improve readability and maximise potential engagement in the study.

Sharon said “I would recommend YPAG to anyone working on research involving children and young people, whatever stage it’s at. The young people gave my project really thorough consideration and their feedback was inspirational. Hopefully the changes they suggested will help me reach more patients – thank you YPAG!”

The group look forward to hearing how the study progresses.
