Sensations of toothbrushing / Invisible chronic health disabilities in education

By KSS YPAG,

At the recent meeting of the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Young People’s Advisory Group  (YPAG) group on Saturday 14th March, the  group heard a presentation about a project led by Dr. Diane Sellers from Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. Diane is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner Speech & Language Therapist and Research Fellow and is part of a team developing an intervention for children who depend upon their parents or carers to clean their teeth.

The group gave suggestions on how the researchers could involve children and young people in the project, their thoughts on some of the intervention techniques and ideas for a snappy project title, this even included some hand drawn logos and animations.

The group also heard a presentation from, Chloe Trussler, a University of Southampton Educational Psychology doctoral student, whose project is looking at the perspectives of ableism for young people with invisible chronic health disabilities in education.

The group discussed their experience or understanding of chronic health conditions, what school might be like for someone with an invisible health condition and what barriers they might face. They provided helpful feedback on the project’s interview topic guide questions for young people.

Thank you to the presenters for sharing their project ideas and development. It was a busy session, and the group will meet again soon for some more brainstorming and lively discussion.
