By KSS YPAG,
At our September YPAG KSS meeting on Saturday 26th, we welcomed three new members and said our thanks and fond farewells to those who have turned 18 and/or moved on.
To start, the group listened to a presentation from Laura Donaldson, a Research Engagement Nurse from University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex). Laura is developing a research engagement programme aimed at 3-7 year olds, which introduces research concepts through fun games and activities. Our YPAG members looked at some of the resources developed by Laura and her team, and took part in some of the physical activities that Laura plans to use and provided useful and constructive feedback.
Laura said “The young people were very engaging and gave really useful feedback as to what they thought worked well. There was also a few that were happy to get in contact with me to discuss helping me shape the workshop with their input.”
After a short break and refreshments, kindly organised by long term facilitator Victoria, the group listened to the second presenter, Isra Husain, a Paediatric Doctor at Worthing Hospital (UHSussex). Isra is looking at how stress, emotion and long term health conditions are experienced by neurodivergent children and young people compared to other children. Isra asked the group some questions about her research idea and for feedback about some of the methods and measurements she plans to use.
When asked about the most useful input gained from YPAG Isra said “the opportunity to hear the voices of children/young people and their parents in a relaxed and comfortable environment i.e. not in a hospital setting when they’re unwell”.
The researchers also had the opportunity to present to the parents/carers group. Many thanks to those that gave their time and feedback. Also thank you to all our facilitators who volunteer their time and a special shout out to Victoria for many years of shopping and setting up the amazing snack table!
We look forward to our next meeting in November and sharing the feedback and any project updates from the researchers.
