By Vijay Tailor-Hamblin,
At YPAG, we started off with a usual icebreaker to brighten up the atmosphere and kick off the session. We were then introduced to Varshie, an Orthoptist who works with Vijay. She introduced us to a new research project which we supported by giving feedback on the idea during the grant application stage. They gave us the opportunity to design the shortname and logo of the study. We ended up drafting the name “DIVE – Decoding Intermittent exotropia unVeiling the mEchanisms” – we came up with an eye diving into the dot of the “i” and others used computer screens with 1’s and 0’s. Varshie and Vijay will take this away and bring back the final logo draft.
Next, two of our members were taken to a separate room to test a couple of the machines and share their experience to record the process of a new study. The videos will be used to train people in how to do the tests. Whilst they were having video recordings the rest of the team recorded voiceovers to accompany the film. Meanwhile, we discussed upcoming trips for YPAG, possible funding options, and any updates regarding the trips.
After that, Jacqueline and Dipesh joined us to talk about a Moorfields strategy called NAPCORE – they are supporting the development of a research strategy for nurses and allied professionals such as optometrists and orthoptists. We talked about our opinions on the project and as children how we could improve and support the development. We were also asked if we could help redesign the name and create a logo.
We then had a quick pizza break, where we all caught up with each other.
After the break, we discussed our research project and how we could further develop our ideas. So far, we have come up with the idea of studying how fatigue affects our performance during visual tasks. We thought of holding online meetings to gather more research and were each assigned the task of investigating whether similar studies have already been conducted. W e are looking forward to the next steps in designing the project!
